Summary
Christos, around thirty, a pilot in the Hellenic Air Force, fakes his own death with the help of Stavros, a former lover of his girlfriend Maria, in order to find out if she truly loves him. Maria, who after Christos’ “death” has again become involved with Stavros, receives letters and taped messages from the “dead” pilot, until she discovers that everything was staged by her lover. She manages to meet Christos but both of them realize that they must find a way of escaping from Stavros’ clutches. In the end, the two men are killed in an accident that Christos provokes in order to save his beloved and at that same moment Maria brings a child into the world.

Karamangiolis loves images, is discerning, and knows how to render what he sees. His documentary, Rom, was a great piece of poetry on the life, manners, and beauty of Roma gypsies.
Black-Out, a 160-minute long film whose production was an odyssey in itself, is also the erotic and existential odyssey of a love triangle; a burning – by its very nature – erotic quest, which aims to reach the very core of pleasure, locate love, discover its mystery, interpret it, experience it, introduce the element of death, pursue metaphysics on non-conventional terms. Karamangiolis has opted for an ornate cinematic style. He applied cutting-edge techniques, and insisted on perfecting his framing down to fine detail. He strove doggedly for years to accomplish everything, creating a film rich in cinematic resources and fulsomely expressive, albeit somewhat marred by such overload. This is a film in which the love triangle of the story is thrown into relief through the film-maker’s deft handling.
